I Love You Pop! (January 21st, 2009)

Most of the time when I sit and jot these thoughts of mine down, they are generally happy and grateful. However, this time, it's a little melancholy. I have a cousin who is 78 years old and is a decorated war veteran from the Korean War. He told me many years ago that he has seen things in his life that of course no one would ever want or should ever have to see. He lost his wife probably 10 -15 years ago. Just a couple of years ago he had open heart surgery. Soon after, you could tell by watching him that he was tired. That his fight was not near as strong. I got the news today....that he passed this morning. So, now I have been working on arrangements for my Dad, myself and possibly my sisters to go to Ohio this Sat. for his funeral. He was a man that seemed too strong for the world to break him. And now, I am saying goodbye when it feels it's too late. It's funny. His last name is BAYER. When I was little, I knew what his last name was, but thought it was always spelled..."BEAR" And because, honestly and humorously, he is the hairiest man I have ever met personally, and had such a deep, rough voice...I thought of him as a "Grizzly Bear." Most of the adults called him Pop. All of us kids called him Uncle Zeke. Then, one day I realized that I too was calling him "Pop." I had grown up, but I expected my elder relatives to stay the same. I have a lot of memories of him to keep. And I am going to miss him so. But today was the day he was able to see his wife again. She was a wonderful woman and I miss her too. But I am happy that the two of them are together again. I love you Pop! May God take care of you now!
